Outdoor Kitchen in Austin, TX

An outdoor kitchen in Austin costs about $8,000 for a basic grill island up to $150,000 or more for a luxury suite, and most land between $20,000 and $60,000. In the city itself, the two things that shape the build most are the City of Austin permit process, the strictest in our area, and the protected tree rules that decide where gas and electrical trenches can run.

Trenching Utilities Around Austin's Protected Trees

Most Austin kitchens need a gas line, one or more electrical circuits, and sometimes water and a drain. Each of those is a trench from the house to the island. In older neighborhoods with big live oaks and pecans, the shortest route often cuts straight through a tree's root zone, and the City of Austin's tree protection rules can limit that.

We plan the island location and the utility route together at the estimate. Sometimes moving the kitchen six feet saves a tree review and a long detour. Sometimes the answer is boring the line under the roots instead of trenching.

Tight Central Lots, Neighbors, and Smoke

On a narrow lot in Bouldin Creek or Crestview, the grill may end up a few yards from a neighbor's bedroom window. Central Texas summer winds mostly come from the south and southeast, so a grill on the south side of a yard pushes smoke across your own patio and into the house next door. We orient the cooking line so smoke clears the dining area and the property line, and we allow for setbacks from your lot lines.

If a smoker is part of the plan, placement matters even more. It runs for hours, not minutes.

Austin Outdoor Kitchen Price Tiers

A basic grill island with storage runs $8,000 to $12,000. A grill and sink island, usually 8 to 10 feet, runs $15,000 to $25,000. An L-shaped kitchen with grill, sink, refrigerator, and storage runs $30,000 to $50,000. A complete kitchen with a full appliance suite runs $50,000 to $85,000.

Add shade and the math changes. A covered patio with a full outdoor kitchen of 400 square feet or more typically runs $55,000 to $85,000. For a smaller yard, a 12x20 aluminum patio cover at $15,000 to $22,000 over a grill island is a common pairing.

Appliances drive most of the spread between tiers. Each added appliance brings its own cutout, venting, and utility needs, so a pizza oven or ice maker costs more than its sticker price once it is built in.

Permits Are Part of the Quote

Gas, electrical, and plumbing work in Austin needs permits, and a roof over the kitchen needs its own. We prepare the drawings, file with the City of Austin, and schedule inspections. The cost is inside your fixed quote.

Budget time as well as money. Permits typically add two to four weeks before construction. Once they are issued, a simple grill island takes about two to three weeks to build, and a complete kitchen four to eight.

About Austin

We Know Austin Backyards

Austin is two different building sites depending on where you live. West of MoPac, many lots sit on limestone under a few inches of soil. East of I-35, expansive clay runs deep. Add the strictest permit process in the area and a tree ordinance that protects large trees, and planning matters more here than anywhere else we work. We build decks, covered patios, pergolas, gazebos, screened porches and outdoor kitchens across Austin.

Permits, HOAs, soil and local building tips for Austin

"Austin soil changes more across town than people expect. West of MoPac you're often on rock with a little dirt on top. East of I-35 it's deep clay that moves. Same deck design, completely different footings. And in the central neighborhoods, the big oak in the backyard usually decides where the deck goes before we do."
