Most deck railings in Austin cost $20 to $100 per linear foot installed, depending on the material: wood, composite, aluminum, or cable. The biggest share of our Austin railing work is replacing guards on older decks and porches that were legal when built but would not pass today. Every new guard we install is at least 36 inches tall with openings a 4 inch sphere cannot pass through.
Central Austin has a lot of decks and raised porches from the 1970s, 80s, and 90s. The common problems we find are short guards under 36 inches, balusters spaced wide enough for a toddler's head, posts notched and bolted with a single carriage bolt, and top rails that flex when you lean on them. None of that is cosmetic. A guard is supposed to stop a fall.
If the framing underneath is sound, a railing replacement is one of the most cost-effective safety upgrades you can make. Replacing railings to current code on an existing deck typically runs $35 to $70 per linear foot installed. If the posts are rotted at the base or the rim joist is soft, we tell you before we quote, because new rails on a failing frame is money wasted.
Before the estimate, you can check two things yourself. Measure from the deck boards to the top of the rail; anything under 36 inches is short by today's standard. Then try to pass a 4 inch ball between the balusters and under the bottom rail. If it fits through anywhere, a small child can too.
An Austin bungalow in Hyde Park or Travis Heights usually looks best with painted wood balusters or a simple square picket, not a black cable run. A contemporary build in Mueller or East Austin often pairs well with horizontal aluminum or cable. On west side lots toward Westlake and Barton Hills, where the ground drops away and the view is the point, cable railing keeps the sightline open.
Some Austin neighborhoods have design review through an HOA or a neighborhood plan, and properties in local historic districts may need review of visible changes. We check what applies to your address before you pick a style.
Wood railings run $20 to $35 per linear foot installed. Composite runs $35 to $60. Powder-coated aluminum runs $40 to $70. Cable runs $60 to $100. As complete systems with posts, a 40 foot basic wood railing typically runs $1,500 to $2,500 installed, and a 60 foot cable railing system $5,000 to $8,000.
Your quote is fixed and in writing. The number we give you is the number you pay.
The City of Austin is the strictest permitting office in our service area. New decks and major deck rebuilds need permits, and the city's protected tree rules can limit where new posts and footings go near large trees. Whether a railing-only replacement needs a permit depends on the scope of the work, so we confirm it with the city for your project and handle the application if one is required.
Austin is two different building sites depending on where you live. West of MoPac, many lots sit on limestone under a few inches of soil. East of I-35, expansive clay runs deep. Add the strictest permit process in the area and a tree ordinance that protects large trees, and planning matters more here than anywhere else we work. We build decks, covered patios, pergolas, gazebos, screened porches and outdoor kitchens across Austin.
Permits, HOAs, soil and local building tips for Austin
"Austin soil changes more across town than people expect. West of MoPac you're often on rock with a little dirt on top. East of I-35 it's deep clay that moves. Same deck design, completely different footings. And in the central neighborhoods, the big oak in the backyard usually decides where the deck goes before we do."
