Round Rock has a large stock of decks from the 1990s and early 2000s, and many of their railings are reaching the end of their life: loose posts, cracked 2x2 balusters, and gray wood caps. Replacing railings to current code typically runs $35 to $70 per linear foot installed. Round Rock builds to the 2024 IRC, which still sets a 36 inch minimum residential guard height and the 4 inch sphere rule.
Push on the top rail at a post. If it moves more than a little, the post connection has loosened, usually because the bolts have crushed into softened wood. Look at the bottom of each post for rot where it meets the deck. Check that the top rail is at least 36 inches above the deck surface; older decks often come in lower. Then check the gaps between balusters with a 4 inch object.
If two or more of those fail, the railing is due. If the deck boards and frame are sound, we replace just the guards and stairs, which costs far less than a new deck.
Also look at the deck from below. A guard is only as strong as the rim joist its posts bolt into. If the rim is split at the bolt holes or stained dark from years of trapped water, the new railing will not hold the way it should, no matter how good it looks. We check that before we quote.
Round Rock issues permits through permits.roundrocktexas.gov and adopted the 2024 IRC. The permit fee for an uncovered deck is $125, and review takes about 30 business days, so railings on a new deck should be planned into that timeline. New work cannot encroach into easements or the 5 foot side and rear setbacks. For a railing-only replacement, we confirm with the city if your scope needs a permit.
Many Round Rock HOAs check exterior colors and materials. If your deck is composite, a matching composite railing is usually the simplest approval. Composite runs $35 to $60 per linear foot installed, so a 60 foot composite railing system is typically $3,000 to $4,500.
We submit the product sheet and color with your HOA application. Waiting on approval before ordering is slower by a week or two, and it avoids replacing a railing the committee rejects.
Around pools, powder-coated aluminum is our usual recommendation. It does not rot from splash water and needs no staining. It runs $40 to $70 per linear foot, and an 80 foot aluminum run typically costs $4,500 to $7,000 installed. Pool barrier rules are separate from deck guard rules, so we check what applies if the railing also serves as part of the pool enclosure.
Aluminum also expands and contracts in the heat, so systems use slotted brackets that let rails move without loosening. We follow the manufacturer's spacing for those brackets rather than cutting sections tight, which keeps the rails straight through a Round Rock summer.
Round Rock is Williamson County's largest city, and it straddles two kinds of ground: limestone on the west side and Blackland clay to the east. It also has some of the clearest published permit rules in the area, down to the fee for an uncovered deck. We build decks, covered patios, pergolas, gazebos and screened porches in Round Rock and handle the city permit and HOA approval.
Permits, HOAs, soil and local building tips for Round Rock
"Round Rock is easy to plan if you start with the city's rules. Five feet off the side and back property lines, nothing in an easement, and the review takes a while. So we lay the deck out against your survey on day one. Then we look at the dirt, because the west side and the east side are two different jobs."

Building codes require railings on any deck surface more than 30 inches above grade - but beyond compliance, quality railings prevent accidents and add significant visual appeal. A well-designed railing system can make your deck feel like a true outdoor room while keeping children, pets, and guests safe.
Every railing we install meets or exceeds local building codes for height, baluster spacing, and load requirements. We handle permits and inspections.
Choose from wood, composite, aluminum, cable, glass, or metal railings. We help you find the perfect balance of aesthetics, maintenance, and budget.
